Home – The Basics

Understanding the basics of dental health is the first step toward maintaining strong and healthy teeth. At Chadstone Dental, we believe that educating our patients about oral health helps prevent common dental problems and supports long‑term wellbeing.
By learning how teeth are structured and how dental issues develop, patients can make informed decisions about preventative care, daily oral hygiene, and professional dental treatments.
Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth and is the hardest substance in the human body. It protects the inner structures of the tooth from damage caused by chewing, temperature changes, and harmful bacteria. Even though enamel is extremely strong, it can gradually wear down due to acidic foods, tooth grinding, and poor oral hygiene.
Dentine lies beneath the enamel and forms the main structure of the tooth. It is slightly softer than enamel and contains microscopic channels that connect to the tooth’s nerve. When dentine becomes exposed due to enamel loss or gum recession, teeth can become sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth and contains nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive. The pulp plays an important role during tooth development and allows teeth to sense temperature and pressure. If bacteria reach the pulp through deep decay or trauma, dental treatment such as root canal therapy may be required.
While teeth are incredibly resilient, they cannot regenerate once damaged. If enamel or dentine is lost due to tooth decay, trauma, excessive wear, or erosion, dental treatment is often required to restore the tooth’s structure and function.
Routine dental examinations allow dentists to identify early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health concerns before they become more serious. Regular visits help ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy over time.
Professional dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar that cannot be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing alone. This treatment helps prevent cavities and supports healthy gums.
Early detection of dental issues can reduce the need for complex treatments later. Diagnostic tools such as dental X-rays allow dentists to identify hidden problems and create personalised treatment plans.
Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that weaken the enamel and dentine. If untreated, decay can lead to cavities and infection.
Grinding or clenching teeth, often during sleep, can cause enamel wear, jaw pain, and tooth fractures. Custom nightguards can help protect teeth from damage.
Accidents, falls, or sports injuries can damage teeth and may require immediate dental care. Wearing custom mouthguards during sports activities can help protect teeth from injury.
Frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks can gradually weaken enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay and sensitivity.
Our dental team is always happy to explain treatment options, procedures, and preventative care so you can feel confident about your dental health decisions.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
