Home – Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is a proven treatment used to save a tooth when the inner nerve becomes infected, inflamed or damaged.
This can happen due to:

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. Inside every tooth is a soft centre called the pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected or inflamed, usually due to decay, cracks, or injury, it can lead to severe pain, sensitivity and swelling.
A root canal carefully removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the inner canals, and seals them so bacteria can no longer enter.
This process:
Once sealed and restored with a crown, the tooth can continue functioning like any other tooth — often for many years with proper care.
Your dentist removes the inflamed or infected nerve tissue and places medicated dressing to manage pain and stop the infection spreading.
The inside of the tooth (root canals) is shaped, flushed and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and ensure no infected tissue remains.
Once infection-free, the canals are filled with gutta-percha, a strong, biocompatible material and sealed permanently to prevent reinfection.
A filling is placed to rebuild the structure. In some cases, a post may be inserted for added support.
Teeth that undergo root canal treatment can become weaker and more brittle over time.
To restore strength, protect the tooth and prevent cracks or fractures, your dentist will recommend a custom-made dental crown once treatment is successful.
Severe toothache or swelling?
Chadstone Dental offers same-day emergency appointments to provide pain relief and begin treatment when necessary.
Some soreness or sensitivity is normal for a few days following each appointment.
Your dentist will advise you on aftercare, healing time and when to return for the permanent crown.
All surgical or invasive procedures carry risks. Treatment outcomes may vary depending on the severity of infection, tooth condition and oral health habits.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
At Chadstone Dental, we offer a wide range of treatments to keep your smile healthy, strong, and confident.

Don’t wait for pain to worsen! Early treatment can prevent further damage.

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and disinfects the canals, and seals them to prevent reinfection. It helps save your natural tooth and eliminate pain.
Treatment usually takes 3–4 appointments, depending on the tooth and infection severity. Each appointment typically lasts 45–60 minutes.
Modern dentistry techniques, including local anaesthesia, make root canals virtually pain-free during the procedure. Some mild soreness may occur for a few days after treatment.
Teeth that undergo root canal treatment can become weaker and more brittle. A crown restores strength, prevents fractures, and protects the tooth for long-term function.
While success rates are high, failure can occur due to complex canals, severe infection, or inadequate sealing. Your dentist will discuss risks and follow-up care to ensure the best outcome.
Root canal treatment is required if a tooth is producing pain due to an irritated/infected nerve, or an abscess. The root canal treatment process takes 3 to 4 appointments depending on the tooth being treated.
Initially, the damaged or dead nerve is removed and medication placed inside the tooth. Next, the internal void of the tooth is cleaned and shaped to ensure thorough removal of bacteria. More medication is placed.
Finally, the inside of the tooth is sealed with cement and filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
A post may be used to help retain a new filling, which will be placed to restore the tooth to initial function.
Once the root canal treatment is considered successful (your dentist will advise on your specific case) a crown must be fitted to reinforce and strengthen the tooth. Typically, teeth which have undergone root canal treatment become more brittle and are weak due to previous large fillings.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
