How to stay cavity-free this holiday period!
The holiday season is upon us and it is one of the hardest times of the year on your health, especially on your dental health. Travelling, uprooted routines and of course, the increase of delicious sweets and treats don’t work in your oral health’s favour.
To help maintain perfect dental health over the holiday period, here are 4 tips and tricks:
Timing treats is important
We all know treats are a big part of the holiday period – whether it’s your Nanna’s Pavlova, a chocolate snowman or even just a good old Zooper Dooper, treats are inevitable – but this holiday period start thinking about timing your treats.
Eating sugary treats with meals or shortly after mealtime is best for your dental health as there is an increase of saliva in your mouth, which helps get rid of any nasty acid produced by bacteria in your mouth and helps rinse away food debris.
Sip water between drinks
Everybody likes to relax during the festive period and let loose with a few cocktails or wine, but consider the damage alcohol causes to your overall dental health. Some alcoholic beverages, such as red wine, are known to stain teeth, and others have high sugar levels, which increases your risk of tooth decay.
Consider drinking a glass of water after every drink – this will not only reduce the side effects of a hangover, but will also help rinse away any nasty bacteria and protect your teeth.
Don’t neglect your dental hygiene routine
During the holiday time, regular routines are left behind for sleep ins, lazy days and spending time with family and friends. This holiday period don’t forget your dental hygiene routine!
Continue to brush & floss your teeth at least twice a day, to ensure any plaque is removed.
Make sure your kids keep up their dental routine too. Tooth enamel on baby teeth are a lot thinner and weaker than on adult teeth, so they are more prone to tooth decay.
Don’t forget your dental appointments
If you’re due for a check-up or in need of some dental work, don’t leave it until after the Christmas period.
Leaving any dental issues untreated as a small issue can turn into a bigger, more painful issue.
Make sure that you schedule any necessary dental appointments before the holiday period starts so that you can relax and enjoy yourself on holidays.
